Drie vrouwelijke componisten

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

Chiquinha Gonzaga (1847-1935)

Gonzaga was a Brazilian composer and the first recognised female conductor in the country. Her main instrument was the piano, and she composed her first piece when she was aged 11. After a turbulent marriage, she devoted her time to composition, and became known as a prolific composer of many different styles, including tangos, waltzes and polkas. Some of her most famous compositions include the polka, Atraente (1877), the waltz Walkyria (1884) and Ó Abre Alas (1899). She created the first society for copyright protection in Brazil called The Brazilian Society of Theatrical Authors (SBAT). On the 17th October 2018, Google honoured her with her own Google Doodle.

Middle Ages

During the middle ages, in the world outside church walls, female troubadours (trobairitz) wrote secular music. The most common musical form used by the trobairitz was the canso, a song in stanza form on topics of courtly love. The songs of the trobairitz help us understand how their society influenced attitudes toward women for centuries to follow:

“Female troubadours…wrote lyrics that followed the courtly love tradition of the troubadours in that they involved themes of adulterous love, the elevation of the lady over the man who loves her, and the torturous nature of romantic love, itself….It’s important…to point out that the placement of women on a pedestal in the courtly love tradition did not do much to dispel the misogyny in society or in art, however. Some of the troubadour lyrics are viciously misogynistic”

Undine Smith Moore - composer

Extract from Oxford Music Online
(b Jarratt, VA, Aug 25, 1904; d Petersburg, VA, Feb 6, 1989). American composer. She studied at Fisk University (AB and diploma 1926), Columbia University Teachers College (AM and diploma 1931) and privately with Howard Murphy. A professor at Virginia State University, Petersburg (1927–89), she co-founded and co-directed the university's Black Music Center (1969–72). Her many honours included the Governor's Award in the Arts (Virginia, 1985) and honorary doctorates from Virginia State (1972) and Indiana (1976) universities.

Moore's compositional style is strongly rooted in the tonal tradition and in her spiritual heritage. Many of her choral works set explicitly Christian, often Biblical texts and employ a style derived from southern hymnody. Who Shall Separate Us From the Love of Christ?, Lord,We Give Thanks to Thee and the seven Choral Prayers in Folk Style, intended for liturgical use, reflect her deep religious faith. While spirituals were among her earliest musical memories, her compositional interest in them only took hold once her formal musical education was complete. She notated melodies her mother and father had learned from their parents and referred to them throughout her mature output, most explicitly in her many choral arrangements, but in other works as well, such as the ...
